Tu je raznolik izbor materijala od kojih je moguće napraviti radne površine.Izbor materijala zavisi od velikog broja  faktora koji igraju značajnu ulogu.Prva stvar su vasa sredstva.Ako imate dovoljno  sredstava,idealno bi bilo da se opredelite za mermer ili granit.Tip materijala koju ćete  upotrebiti možete takođe izabrati prema njihovim svojstvima.

Radne površine od mermera ili granita imaju različitu funkciju u  vašoj kuci u zavisnosti od njihove ugradnje.Tako,radna ploča kuhinje po meri služi za  pripremu ručka,površine od ovih vrsta kamena u trpezariji obično označavaju  mesto gde se ruča,dok radne površine u wc-u služe kao police za držanje  raznih preparata.
    
Koja je razlika  između mermera i granita?Mermer je privlačan zbog velikog broja boja i šara u kojima se vadi.To je metamorfozna stena koja je mekša od granita i lako ju je izgrebati.Takođe, kisele tecnosti mogu dovesti do trajnih oštećenja na ovoj vrsti kamena.Granit,u odnosu na mermer,je nastao kao rezultat velikih količina pritiska i toplote.Iz tog razloga,mnogo je  tvrđi od mermera i jako ga je teško ogrebati.Sa odgovarajućom glazurom,potpuno je otporan na  fleke.

Ima na  stotine kamenoloma širom sveta na kojima se kopaju ove dve vrste kamena.Različite zemlje  obeležavaju različite šare i boje ovih vrsta kamena.Ove vrste kamena mogu posedovati  različite ili ponavljajuće šare,jednoobrazne boje i nijanse a sve u zavisnosti od tipa  reza.

Granitne ploče dolaze u velikom broju vrsta i obrade.Najpopularniji tipovi su  polirani,spaljeni i strugani.Mermerne radne površine dolaze u dva elementarna tipa. Uglačane mermerne radne ploče su divne ali se vrlo lako mogu upropastiti u  dodiru sa kiselkastim tečnostima zato se slabo koriste u  kuhinjama.
